This song is a meditation and series of observations about the changes in day-to-day life in the time of COVID-19. It started out as what I call a "glitch in the Matrix:" Sometimes I will sit down to write or practice, and get stuck playing chords over and over again until something wonderful comes forth in lyrics.
lyrics
Staring through a faded curtain
Crepey and withered, like the leaves
Time moves so slowly when you're learning not to go too fast
Echoes of yesterday are deafening
I sit alone, gazing at the street, sidewalks sleeping
Don't you ever feel the same
Nothing is the same as it was
And it never will be again
Testing, testing, sending my signal clear
Wishing it wasn't so hard to hear
The waiting world is stepping in and slipping time
Makes me wonder when will I
In the lonely road the children are playing
But I'm afraid to walk out the door
In the lazy sky the vultures are swirling
Makes me wonder who they're sweeping for
No, nothing's as it seems anymore
Nothing makes sense anymore
Well I sit here alone, gazing at the street, sidewalks sleeping
Don't you ever feel the same
Well I know I'm not alone in my solitary dreaming
I hear your voice, it's calling again
Sweet softly calling
Sweet softly moving
Sweet softly whispering
I hear your voice, it's calling again
